This Read Me file contains a brief introduction to the Fetch Browser that is distributed with the America In Motion CD-ROM from Jasmine Multimedia Publishing. The Read Me is divided into four sections:

“Fetch” is the name for a new multi-user, multi-media database application from Aldus Corporation that helps you make effective use of your America In Motion CD-ROM collection. The Fetch Browser lets you quickly and easily find, preview, and use the items in this collection. You can add keywords to items in the catalog that you use frequently (but you cannot add or delete items in the catalog or create new catalogs).
Using the Fetch Browser, you can scroll through the gallery of thumbnails for a quick visual view of what’s available, or search for images by filename, keyword, file type, or volume. Once found, image files can be copied, previewed, printed, placed, or deleted, or opened by an application you choose.
Features of Fetch that you will appreciate as you use the Browser include these:
- Searching is fast
- Searching is easy.
- You can name and save frequently used searches.
- If you copy the America In Motion catalog to a server or public volume, multiple users can browse or search the catalog at the same time.
- You can add keywords and text descriptions to the items that you wish — for example, to keep track of the history of use of particular items. (You must copy the America In Motion catalog from the CD-ROM on which you received it to your hard drive or a server before you can add keywords.)
America In Motion contains video and audio files. Each video file has been saved in two formats (160x120 pixels, 16 bit color using the Apple Video Compressor and 240x180 pixels, 24 bit color using the Apple Compact Video Compressor). The audio files on this disk are saved as 8 bit, 22kHz, mono AIFF files and can be imported into QuickTime playback applications and editors.
You need to have QuickTime from Apple installed on your system to preview any item. For System 6.0.7 or later users, install QuickTime by dragging the QuickTime icon from the “Other Stuff” folder to your System folder and restart your computer. For System 7 users, install QuickTime by dragging the QuickTime icon from the “Other Stuff” folder to the extensions folder of your System folder and restart your computer.
QuickTime is an extension to System 7.0 and an INIT (startup document) for System 6.0.7. QuickTime 1.0 runs on all 68020-based and higher Macintosh color-capable computers with at least 2 MB of RAM.
The fastest way to learn to use Fetch is to jump right in and start exploring. If you’ve ever used a library catalog of almost any kind, you already have a good idea of how to use Fetch. To begin, double-click on the America In Motion Catalog icon to start Fetch. Then click the “Find All” button in the Find window. Fetch displays a thumbnail gallery of the entire collection in a Gallery window. Scroll through this gallery to see what’s there. Then scan the menu commands to get a feel of your options and alternatives.
1. Double-click on the America In Motion Catalog icon. Fetch will launch and display the following Find window:
2. Click the Find All button to display a gallery of the files contained on the America In Motion CD-ROM.
3. Double-click on the thumbnail labeled "Balloons 1" to display this video file. (Note: Double-clicking on any thumbnail that contains an image will preview that item at full size.)
4. Return to the Gallery window by selecting “Gallery” from the Window menu.
5. Double-click on the text below the thumbnail to display more information about the file, including an alphabetical listing of catalog keywords. (Note: Double-clicking on the text below any thumbnail reveals more information about the file.)
6. Double-click on any catalog keyword to view all files associated with that keyword. This process of selecting a thumbnail, getting information about it, then double-clicking on a keyword is one method of exploring the America In Motion collection.
Using the Find window in Fetch, you can search by any combination of filename, keyword, file type, or volume. You can search on a single attribute, or combine attributes to narrow your search more quickly. For example, you might search for items that contain the keyword “America” of file type “MooV” as two separate searches or as a single combined search. You can also view the entire catalog by selecting "Find All" from the Search menu.
Items retrieved by the search are displayed in the Gallery window as a gallery of thumbnails that you can scroll to find the particular item you will use. You can also view the gallery as a text list that gives information on filename, file type, and other attributes of the items in the catalog.
In the Gallery window, you can:
- double-click an item to open a Preview window, where you can zoom in or out.
- double-click the filename below an item to get more information about the item.
In the Pasteboard window, you can temporarily store items retrieved from multiple searches. You can name and save a group of items — for example, items needed repeatedly for an active project, or items used frequently — as a Fetch “project” (using the “Save As Project…” command on the Item Menu).
You can display the information in both the Gallery and Pasteboard windows in either Thumbnail view or Text List view. Thumbnail view gives you visual access to the items in the catalog; Text List view gives you more information about each item and can be sorted by filename, file type, or file location.
For more information about using the catalog, help is available in two forms:
• If you are running System 6, take a look at “Fetch Shortcuts,” using the command located on the Apple menu. You’ll find these screens helpful in providing a quick reference to Fetch as you work.
• If you are running System 7, “Fetch Shortcuts” is on the Apple Help menu. You’ll also find extensive Balloon Help about every menu, command, and dialog box option. We recommend that you take a few minutes to turn Balloon Help on and explore Fetch’s highways and byways before you start using the catalog.
